Standing out is hard. Standing out amongst one hundred other university graduates with just a two page CV and a cover letter is much harder.
So, how about switching up the formula?
What if, instead of that CV typed up in Times New Roman 12pt, graduates gave employers something different, something striking and individual? Well, that’s exactly what UK-based printing company is helping students do this summer.
Their brand new competition, which launched 30th May, asks students and graduates to design a 32 sheet billboard, with the aims of promoting themselves to future employers. Entries will close 30th June midnight, after which five finalists will be chosen by and forwarded to a public vote. The overall winner will then see their design placed on a billboard in any UK/IRE city of their choice.
Beyond the intention of promoting themselves and their employability, talented hopefuls are given no other design requirements, allowing them the freedom to think outside the box. Students can direct passersby to an online portfolio or social channel, showcase photographs of their most impressive achievements or simply shout about why any business would be lucky to have them.
CEO Peter Bradley knows that today’s graduates don’t have it easy when it comes to job-hunting. He commented, “This competition isn’t just about creating a nice design and seeing it go up on a billboard. It’s about an innovative, forward-thinking young person framing their skill set in an eye catching way.”
Marketing students may find this of particular interest. Being both creative and strategic in nature, this is the kind of opportunity that can highlight their ability to think outside the box. After all, these are the people who know firsthand the power of publicity.
